What a Feeling - 2013 Theme Your Business Challange
Song Title: “Flashdance - What a Feeling” by Irene Cara.
Theme: Believing in Yourself and Following Your Passions
Why: In 1983 when the movie Flashdance came out, I was high on life because I was one of a very few of my classmates to have a job. At that time, there was a hiring freeze on nurses and I was so very blessed to be one of the lucky ones who actually had a job. And, it was a darn good one too!
I passed up a college scholarship to attend a different college so, my 'tough-love' parents informed me that I would be paying for college myself since I had opted to give up the scholarship at a very good school. That meant that I would be in one of the toughest programs in college at the time, playing basketball and volleyball for the school AND working to pay for my tuition. I KNEW that I could do it, if it didn't kill me first!
Thankfully, I was young enough that my passion kept me going for the 4 years that it took to get through college and because I had to have a job during that time, I was a shoe-in for a job as a Registered Nurse when I graduated. My classmates were not so fortunate - for several years they looked for jobs or worked PRN (as needed) in various hospitals and medical facilities.
1999, I retired from nursing; soon I found myself bored out of my mind and decided to go into real estate. I heard through the grapevine that 'no one passes the licensing exam the first time.' So, once again, I allowed my passion to take over and achieved success on the state exam the first time.
The one motto that I shared with my boys during their entire childhood was, "If you can dream it, you can do it!" Besides my faith and my family, real estate was my passion and I knew that if I worked hard enough, I could achieve success in the business.
Then the recession that reared its ugly head in 2008 completely changed my path in the business, as it did for most in real estate. Once again, I was absolutely determined to survive and, as difficult as it was, make the changes necessary to continue my path down this ever-changing 'real estate road!'
Survival was NOT just an option - it was the ONLY path I knew! As Irene Cara said in this song, "Take your passion and make it happen;" I did just that! Helping others achieve their goals is one of my main goals but, I had to figure it out myself first--and that didn't come by working 9-5 either!
"In a world made of steel, made of stone." I knew that I had to learn more about technology and that the buck stops here with regards to customer service. I had to turn my business upside down and inside out--totally redesigning it. This was not the easiest challenge that I had ever encountered; in fact, it was, by far, the most difficult. Again, taking my passion and making it happen was the only thing that I knew to do; quitting and going back to the hospital was NOT an option for me!
With all of the customer-centric capabilities available to us, both personally and technically, business began to soar and helping others in the business achieve success became possible once again. Those who did what it took in our area, pushed through the lean years.
With a solid foothold from years of building, 2013 was an absolutely stellar year! I'll always be a believer that if you can dream it, you can DO it. YES, there is a LOT more to it than just being lucky and sitting back and waiting for your dreams to come true - it's work, HARD WORK, but. it pays in dividends!
Take Away: "What a feeling; being's believing. I can have it all. Now I'm dancing for my life. Take your passion and make it happen. Pictures come alive. You can dance right through your life!"
If you're feeling challenged, take your passion and make it HAPPEN!
Here's to a fabulous 2014...and the next challenge in life...
