My Favorite Spot - Home Sweet Home
Growing up in an Air Force family, I had the pleasure of moving quite a bit during my childhood (yes, there's a teeny tiny bit of sarcasm in that comment). I loved the different areas that we lived but, we were always state-side, unlike my brother, who eventually attended the US Air Force Academy and later traveled the world with the USAF!
My favorite home as a child was when we lived in Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi. Of course, we were only there a short while but, we lived right on the coast and that is where I learned to sail, was kissed by a boy for the first time and learned that beach or lake living was something that I would eventually indulge in again, later in life - I loved that area!
My father eventually retired from the USAF and we wound up in Hickory, NC - a small town, a little over an hour away from Charlotte. My father was transferred to Georgia 1 year later and thankfully, my basketball coach convinced my parents to allow me to stay there to finish out my junior and senior years in high school. They did and I also finished college here in NC. It was the first time in my life I had spent more than 1.5 years ANYWHERE!
I was in 9 different schools from kindergarten to 12th grade so, staying in one spot was a dream come true for me!
Following college, I moved to Charlotte, at the pleading of a dear friend of mine who had just moved here to start a new job at the major medical center here. I followed suit and have never looked back!
I have lived in many areas of the city, mostly for the benefit of my children and their schools or extracurricular activities! I did live at the lake for about 5 years but, then didn't like being so far away from it all. I moved closer into the city after my children were born. I've resided in 6 different homes here, each time after leaving the lake, moving to accommodate someone else in my family!
Finally, our boys flew the nest and Ray and I found ourselves living in South Charlotte, wishing for a more central location. Each time we built or bought a home, I learned a little more about what we actually needed/wanted and this last time, we knew exactly what we wanted!
We found a great piece of land, right in the heart of SouthPark/Charlotte and had a well-known local architect draft exactly what we wanted! My passion for construction took over and I talked a local custom builder into allowing me to oversee the project, with his supervision, of course. I thought I knew a lot about construction but, boy, oh boy, did I learn even more!
Three years ago, about this time, we were underway, building our current home. While pouring footings, we found that the lot had a dry creek bed running right through it. So, we wound up having to take an 87-pylon-detour that took quite a bit of extra time to complete and a LOT of money! 87, 25-foot pylons were drilled into the ground inside the footings and as a result, we now own the most structurally sound residential home in Charlotte! We ran into other issues as well but, most were very minor and most were quickly and easily overcome - with a little money! ;-)
People say that building a home can be disastrous on a marriage - well, that's a myth that I'm proud & thrilled to say, we were able to dispel! We had a great time and for the life of me, I have no idea how I managed to sell over 80 homes that year AND build a house. I was onsite every single day and spent many nights planning the next steps or building chandeliers for my new home (yes, instead of buying them, I decided I wanted to build my own - another story for a later time!). It's amazing how much 'additional' time we have that we can put to good use when pressed to do so!
For me, living in SouthPark has given me back SO much of my life in the way of time alone. I am able to have dinner at home every night that we want to dine in, my Closing attorneys are now 3-7 minutes away from my home and if I'm representing the sellers, Closing at the buyers' attorneys' offices, I'm very rarely more than 15 - 20 minutes away from home.
Doctors, shopping, fantastic dining and recreation are all a couple of minutes from my home! I am about 10 minutes from Uptown - 15 if traffic is horrendous - and all that Uptown has to offer (sports, arts, more dining). Our home is 12 minutes from Ballantyne, where I spend a good deal of my showing time! I am 15 minutes from Fort Mill, where a large number of our buyers are finding their dream homes the past few years. It's honestly a dream - location DOES matter!
Not to mention, we built exactly what we wanted - and cannot complain about anything! Life is good in the Maxwell house; this is my favorite spot - home, sweet home in Charlotte, North Carolina!
Thank you, Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, Broker, Tacoma Washington, for this challenge! I originally thought I would share my story on my home in Gulfport as a child but, honestly, I never felt the true sense of belonging in any home I've lived, until now - this is my all-time favorite! It may not be 'unique' but, it sure is special to me!
