Speechless Sundays - Reno Step 2 - Tear Down Those Walls!
After having written a post about HGTV and how they make renovations seem so simple, I do have to share a real-life story about 'tearing down those walls.'
Now that the floors are finished (Speechless Sunday - Step 1 - The Floors - Before & After) they're moving on to more projects.
Early on, permitting was sought to do some electrical work and part of that job required rewiring one of the bedrooms as well as moving electrical in a wall that was about to be removed. The structural engineer had to sign off on removing the wall (at least direct the contractor in options for removing the wall) before the contractor began the work.
The options were removing the wall to the header, requiring little attic work for support since the wall that was being removed was a load-bearing wall. Or, the entire wall could be removed by adding a beam in the attic, which was going to require moving the truss system to install the beam - and was about $2K more expensive to do.
Being first-time homebuyers, Matt & Mili decided to go with keeping the header and the minimal attic work. Before they decided to open up the wall, there was a small, 30" door opening (no door, just a small opening) going into the kitchen area.
Here's the after:
Next step is the painting - to be done this week. I can't wait for those photos!
Have a great week ahead!
