Charlotte NC's Meck-South Rotary Club 'Pitches In' Again!



Simmons YMCA in Charlotte NC (6824 Democracy Drive) needed a new playground and many area volunteers didn't think twice about helping to build it!  Some of the volunteers included those from my own, Meck-South Rotary Club.  Bill Woodruff, our Service Projects Chairman, did a wonderful job of rising to the challange of a late call to help!  He coordinated many of our members to plan and oversee much of the playground's new construction.  We're proud to say that the project is complete and now Simmons YMCA has a new KaBoom! playground!  

Monetary donations and even sweat-equity for the project was led by our own NBA star, Antawn Jamison!  Antawn has been a dynamic leader in community service for our area for a very long time.  He attended Providence High School, where he led the team to many victories, putting the newer school on the 'map!'  He now plays for the Washington Wizards and took time out of his summer break to assist in this worthwhile community service project.

Free Outdoor Charlotte Symphony Concert -
Summer Pops 2009 - Sunday, June 7

It's that time again!  Pack your picnic baskets and bring your blankets, chairs, friends and family to enjoy the sounds of the Charlotte Symphony Summer Pops 2009 beginning today (Sunday), June 7, 2009.  Preludes begin at 7PM and the concert ends at 9:00PM. 

So, after you've packed your picnic baskets (with your Taste of Charlotte fare), come over to Symphony Park (behind SouthPark Mall) for "The Charlotte Symphony Goes Country." 

From the Wild, Wild West--enjoy tunes such as John Williams' The Cowboys, Aaron Copland's "Hoedown" from Rodeo and Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! among others from the American frontier.

A good time will be had by all!

Charlotte’s food festival, Taste of Charlotte, is ending it's 11th year--But, WAIT--you still have one more day to enjoy this fantastic event!  What’s so great about Taste of Charlotte?   All you have to do is show up in Uptown Charlotte (Tryon Street) and over 30 restaurants will provide you samples of the city's best eats! The  schedule includes live music, dancing, childrens activities, much more.

Taste of Charlotte is the cheapest way to try the foods you’ve always wanted to try but, didn't want to spend the money to see if you like it!  You simply purchase a cup of 15 coins for only $20.  You then exchange between 1 and 3 coins for food items of your choice.

Here is a list of menu items.  The toughest part of Taste of Charlotte--deciding which of the foods you're going to sample before you fill up on some of the best that Charlotte has to offer!

Flight of Honor Charlotte NC

Over 100 World War II veterans from the Charlotte Metro area enjoyed a historic flight on Saturday that took them to Washington D.C.  

This, the first ever Flight of Honor, left from Charlotte so that these veteranss could experience the World War II Memorial at no cost to any of the veterans.

"It's something that needed to be done in the Charlotte area," Bob Wilson, our Rotary governor of District 7680, said. "We owe so much to these people who are parents and grandparents."

The veterans left Charlotte-Douglas International Airport at 9 a.m. and returned around 8 p.m. The trip was completely paid for by various sponsors, including the Mecklenburg-South Rotary club who provided sponsorship for our Assistant District Governor, Tinney Shifley's WWII veteran father.

For many of the veterans, Saturday was the first time that they had seen the Memorial, and for others, the first time that they were able to share their war stories with fellow veterans.

With tens of thousands of WWII veterans in our area, we feel that there is a need for this to become an annual or semi-annual affair!
