Noratel Making Charlotte New US Headquarters

Charlotte JobsNoratel North America Inc., a European transformer manufacturer, has relocated its US headquarters right here in Charlotte!  Ayrsley Town Centre will be Noratel’s new home at 2015 Ayrsley Town Boulevard, Suite 202.

Noratel has been producing transformers for over 86 years and is a highly respected international group of 16 companies in 12 different countries, employing more 2,300.  Noratel supplies transformers and reactors globally, with worldwide sales of approximately $140 million.  Noratel offices are located in Europe, Asia and now, North America.

Noratel’s move to Charlotte was due to our solid infrastructure, quick access to an international airport, an attractive business environment, a convenient time zone to Europe and reasonable living costs.  Close proximity to many of their customers’ headquarters was also appealing.

Charlotte NC Economic Update - Charlotte is Bananas over Chiquita!

Bananas Over Chiquita!

Charlotte has gone tropical! The Top Banana is Coming to CharlotteCharlotte has gone absolutely bananas over the announcement that Chiquita is reloacting its headquarters to the Queen City!

No more is our claim that Charlotte is the Top Banana in North Carolina just a figure of  speech, it’s literal now!  Another Fortune 1000 company, Chiquita is making its way into the Uptown Charlotte area with new headquarters in the NASCAR Hall of Fame tower.   We never expected to be known as a ‘tropical paradise’ either but, with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and Governor Bev Perdue’s recent announcement, we ARE!

In a recent interview with Chiquita’s CEO, Fernando Aguirre stated, "Charlotte provided the most compelling economic opportunity for Chiquita by far and the region is a very attractive region for our employees."  He also added that, "99% of what we hear on Twitter is positive and of course the Charlotte community was very proactive in Twitter and very positive” - a highly progressive company has chosen one of the most progressive, high-tech cities in the Nation in which to do business! (#Chiquita)

Chiquita, who is investing $14,000,000 in the Charlotte area, plans to bring around 400 jobs to the Queen City; half of those jobs will be new hires from the Charlotte area.   The annual average salary for these positions will be $106,000.  These new jobs will include management positions, sales, marketing and IT jobs, expected to be nearly complete by mid-summer, 2012.  The administrative offices as well as the research and development department will be moved to Charlotte’s Uptown area.

Why did the Chiquita CEO Fernando Aguirre  choose Charlotte as the top banana?  The business climate, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (one of the highest ranked airports in America) and Charlotte’s quality of life were all factors that made the Queen City a convincing ‘sale’ to Chiquita executives.

As an added bonus for the Queen City, Chiquita will be providing Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools with 15 salad bars in district school cafeterias--truly a tropical paradise for our community children!

Charlotte is bananas over Chiquita making Charlotte’s ‘top banana’ status go from figurative to literal!  Welcome to Charlotte Chiquita!

Charlotte's Rich History Continues to Drive The City's Economic Diversity in 2011

Charlotte’s Rich History and Economic Diversity Make Charlotte One of the Most Desirable Places to Live in America.

Charlotte was originally settled by the Scotch-Irish in the 1740′s, as well as by a strong influence of German colonists who migrated south at about the same time.  The Queen City‘s namesake was the German born Queen Charlotte, wife of England’s King George III, and Mecklenburg County was also named for her German birthplace.  The Bank of America tower actually has a crown architecturally incorporated in its design in honor of the Queen!

Charlotte North Carolina Skyline

From its modest beginnings as a small village, Charlotte abruptly attained ‘city’ status with America’s first discovery of gold in 1799. It was also the first small step in establishing the city as a financial center. Charlotte quickly became the gold mining capital of the country until the California Gold Rush fifty years later.  The center of the trading paths during the Gold Rush, from each direction, meeting at what is now, Trade and Tryon Streets in the heart of Charlotte’s Uptown.

Charlotte become known as a textile center when the cotton industry moved south from New England. By 1903, and was clearly defined as a textile leader.  Business activities in the Charlotte area really began to flourish with the arrival of the railroad, giving way to Charlotte becoming a major distribution hub, remaining today, at the center of the largest consolidated rail system in the United States.

The Queen City, in recent years, became officially known as a financial center and in early 2000, was (and still is) the second largest banking center in America!  Today, proactive business leaders, our Chamber of Commerce and our Governor have all been diligently working to bring energy business to Charlotte.  We’re quickly making headway and feel confident that soon, Charlotte will be known as the energy capital of America!

Recent news with regards to Charlotte’s economic prowess can be found in these articles:

Charlotte Real Estate Recovery: The Queen City is the Second-Best Value City In America!

Charlotte Real Estate Recovery:  The Queen City is the Second-Best Value City In America!

Great news for Charlotte's Real Estate Recovery:  Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has named Charlotte as the second-best value city in America.  According to Kiplingers, "value" is defined as a low cost of living with a strong economy and personal amenities.   Charlotte ranks second only to Omaha, Nebraska!

Charlotte Real Estate Recovery - Value City

While banking brings more than 50,000 jobs to Charlotte, healthcare, manufacturing, and textiles are strong components of our job market.  The nation's top bank (measured in total deposits), Bank of America, is headquartered here in Charlotte as well as another large national bank, Wells Fargo.  As a growing energy hub, Charlotte's own Duke Energy is poised to become the largest utility company in the Nation.  Toshiba and Siemen's are also bringing many new jobs to the Charlotte area this year and many more planned during the projected 5-year plan.  Green energy has also become a growing business as well as the increase in small business start-ups being drawn to the Charlotte metro area.  Other major area headquarters also include large companies such as Lowe's and Family Dollar, both headquartered in or near Charlotte.

Charlotte also boasts a strong educational system with over half of Charlotte area high schools ranking in Newsweek's top 100 schools across the nation.  Average home prices are in the $200,000 to $250,000 range, whether it be a loft in Charlotte's Uptown area or a home in a swim and tennis community in the suburbs such as Willowmere.  Charlotte also earned high marks in the Kiplinger study for its low taxes and her residents enjoy wallet-friendly utility rates.  New construction costs are extremely reasonable with a stock of cheap local materials holding housing costs to just 80% of the national average.

From vibrant gallery crawls in Charlotte's NoDa to 'Alive After Five' in the Uptown area, Charlotte's energy is contageous!  If you're looking for things to do in Charlotte, we have them on our Things to Do In Charlotte Facebook page.

Charlotte's real estate recovery as well as our economic viability is a strong draw for newcomers to the area.  Here are a few Charlotte trivia items for 2011:

  • Population (metro): 1,641,257
  • Unemployment rate: 10.4%
  • Cost-of-living index: 93.0
  • Median household income: $53,168

More Gems in Queen Charlotte's Crown

Another Gem Added To Queen Charlotte's Crown

Charlotte North Carolina Economic Update

According to CNN Money Magazine and the latest census data release, population growth during the last decade made the South the fastest-growing region in the US.  Eight of the 11 metropolitan areas noted as highest in population growth including Austin, Charlotte, Raleigh and Orlando, were in the South.  The top three metropolitan areas were:

Raleigh, NC
Total Population: 1,130,490
Change From 2000: 41.8%

Austin, TX
Total Population: 1,716,289
Change From 2000: 37.3%

Charlotte, NC
Total Population: 1,758,038
Change From 2000: 32.1%

As the largest of the three and North Carolina's largest metropolitan area, Charlotte continues to boast expansion, affordable living and incredible job growth in a financial services hub as well as the newly tagged US Energy City.  What is so appealing about Charlotte is that although the growing metropolis has expanded tremendously, our 'good old' Southern roots have been preserved.  Charlotte is able to accommodate modern-day living, with a skyline that includes upscale condominium skyscrapers and century-old Fourth Ward Victorian homes (Uptown Charlotte) surrounded by golfing, lake, equestrian and 'farm' living in the suburbs.  Charlotte attracts young professionals, entrepreneurs, retirees, families and singles--all who have the option of a grand suburban life or a condo or home that is within walking distance to their jobs, oftentimes giving both a try during their time spent here in Charlotte.

Home to the headquarters of Bank of America, Charlotte remains a banking powerhouse with one of the highest ratio of bank branches to population in the nation, banking assets of approximately $2.3 trillion, second only to New York.  Recently Duke Energy, Siemens and The Shaw Group have been instrumental in propelling Charlotte to a top-tier energy city with multiple new expansions expected during the next 24 months.

Carolinas Healthcare Group employs 50,000 people in Charlotte, Wells Fargo/Wachovia employs 20,000 people and Bank of America employs almost 14,000.

Charlotte Economic News: More Energy Jobs Announced

Charlotte Economic News:  More Energy Jobs Announced

Charlotte Energy Jobs Coming ImmediatelyCharlotte NC:  Charlotte is quickly becoming the forerunner to become the “New Energy Capital” of the world, already a national hub for the energy industry.

The Shaw Group is expanding its stake in nuclear power
, announcing a major role in a 2,700-megawatt South Texas project and adding an agreement with Toshiba to be the exclusive contractor for Toshiba plants worldwide.

The South Texas project is the largest nuclear construction project in Shaw’s history, Shaw Chief Executive Jim Bernhard Jr. told analysts on Monday.  This extends the company's highly visible role as exclusive contractor for the Westinghouse AP1000 plants and is very good news for Charlotte, Shaw's home base.

Shaw Power Group will hold the initial engineering, procurement and construction contract for the two-reactor expansions proposed for the South Texas project.  However, Shaw will be more than the contractor, Shaw will also be a partner with Toshiba in the project, investing up to $250 million in nuclear projects. Bernhard said, “We believe that (the Westinghouse and Toshiba) technologies combined will certainly together exceed the largest percentage of reactors to be built in the world, compared to other technologies that are commercially available.”

Shaw remains bullish on the future of nuclear power, saying that things in the United States have grown slower than expected but, nuclear plant construction worldwide, is surging forward.

Shaw will add 225 jobs to the 1,100 already in Charlotte in an order to support the new nuclear development agreement.  Hiring will begin this week and more than 180 of the new hires will be engineers, with an average salary of nearly $95,000 a year.

Since 2009, major energy industry expansions and relocations have been announced by several companies such as Siemens Energy, Areva, Babcock & Wilcox, SPX and ABB Group (to Huntersville), adding many new jobs to the Charlotte Metro area.
