Charlotte NC To Host The 2012 Democratic National Convention

Charlotte is pleased to announce that she's hosting the 2012 Democratic National Convention!  Charlotte was selected from the smaller pool of finalists cities:  St. Louis, Cleveland and Minneapolis.  Whatever your political affiliation may be, this is great news for the Queen City!

The convention will be held at the Bobcats' Time Warner Cable Arena during the week of September 3, 2012.

The First Lady said she and the President are, "Thrilled to be bringing the convention to Charlotte.  All the contending cities were places that Barack and I have grown to know and love, so it was a hard choice."

North Carolina was a critical state for Democrats in the last presidential election (2008), being one that Obama won by only a fine margin of 50 to 49% against Republican Senator John McCain.

The Republican National Convention will take place in Tampa, FL in 2012,  the last week in August, just one week prior to the DNC.

Thanks to Mayor Anthony Foxx, Senator Kay Hagan, Governor Bev Perdue, and all of Charlotte's leaders who have helped to make this happen for the Queen City!

Meck-South Rotary Club :: A Friday with the Secret Service

If you're in Charlotte and would like to attend Charlotte's most active, fun-filled Rotary Club, join us each Friday morning at Piper Glen Country Club (7:30) for an hour of breakfast, entertainment and comaradarie!  You'll definitely want to be in attendance this Friday when we have Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Charlotte Secret Service Office, Glen Kessler, as our speaker.

During the Civil War, as much as one-third of the nation’s currency was counterfeit.  The currency dilemma was so overwhelming that Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch approached President Lincoln on April 14, 1865 with a plan to assign a handful of men to the problem.  Ironically, President Lincoln signed the order and then left to attend a play at Ford’s Theater where he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. 

On July 5th, 1865, the Secret Service Division began with eight Secret Service “operatives” with undercover identities so their work could remain “secret”, thus the name Secret Service.  Chief William Wood was sworn in as the head of the agency and within one year, he had placed operatives in 11 cities around the country and had arrested 200 counterfeiters and destroyed many of the counterfeit plants. 

Continuous full-time Secret Service Presidential protection did not begin until 1901.  After the assassination of Lincoln, Congress discussed Presidential protection, but nothing was done at the time.  The second Presidential assassination of James Garfield in July 1881 also failed to bring about any organized protection from Congress.  Finally, after President McKinley was assassinated in September 1901, the Secret Service operatives began protecting Theodore Roosevelt, although Congress still did not pass a law authorizing it until 1906.

Today’s Secret Service missions are still two-fold.  Agents investigate counterfeiting and any high-technology crimes, such as computer hacking and access device fraud, while still protecting the President and Vice-President, their immediate families, former Presidents and spouses, visiting heads of state and major Presidential and Vice-Presidential Candidates.

Friday evening I was honored to win tickets to the charity event to benefit drumStrong (DrumsForCures) and the Levine Children's Hospital's cancer research here in Charlotte NC (Thank you Meck-South Rotary for the evening)!  Spirit Square was the venue and the place will just never be the same for me!  There were amazing bands and a 'Not-So-Silent Auction' and lots and lots of food and beverage!  Generosity spilled into the hallways of Spirit Square with donations from across the Carolinas and the world!  There were trips to Tuscany, autographed footballs and photographs, crystal and jewelery and much more--all donated by those who are just hoping and praying for a cure for children's cancer.


The 

live auction featured a Porsche 2-hour tour and other amazing items that those in the crowd so generously stepped up to bid upon.  




The music began with a concert by a local band called HWY 17.  As it happens, three of the band members are also members of my Rotary group and they put on quite a show!  They played while we all ate and browsed the silent auction items.


Then a group of percussionists drummed their way into our hearts (with the belly dancers following) and led the crowd into the main McGlohon Theatre for the main event.  I have to say that one of my favorites was Vinx--he is ONE talentented individual and I even got a hug from him after the show as he was browsing the auction items with the rest of us!  That was quite a treat!
