Incorporated in 1768 and named for the wife of King George III, Charlotte NC is an everchanging, ever-growing North Carolina city. Charlotte NC is the largest city in North Carolina and has changed from an agrarian township to a gold town, then textile center and banking giant. Now, Charlotte is the second largest banking center in the US. only behind New York City, New York. Visitors to the Queen City, as she is so aptly nicknamed, are treated to historic attractions as well as a variety of arts, events and recreational activities. Charlotte is ideally located to take in the wonders of North Carolina, as it is a short three-hour drive from the Atlantic beaches and only two hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains.
ORIENTATION: Charlotte is located in the Piedmont region, between the coastal plains and the Appalachian Mountains, of North Carolina and along North Carolina's southern border with South Carolina. Columbia, SC is 140 miles (225 km) south of Charlotte via I-77. The triangle cities of Winston-Salem, High Point and Greensboro are approximately 85 miles (137 km) north of the city along I-85.
CLIMATE: Charlotte, North Carolina is a true four-season zone. A moderate climate of warm summers and cool winters makes Charlotte a comfortable place to visit year-round. Summers in Charlotte are long and when winter does arrive, we have very little snow accumulation, if any. Most years, the first snowfall does not come to Charlotte until late December or early January. The city’s location in North Carolina’s Piedmont region and its distance from the Atlantic Ocean also help support Charlotte's moderate climate. Hurricanes occasionally affect the coastal region of North Carolina; however, Charlotte is rarely affected by more than heavy rain during these occasions. Rainfall is fairly consistent throughout the year with the exception of some dry spells during late summer and early fall.
TRANSPORTATION: With I-77 and I-85 intersecting in Charlotte, reaching the city via the freeway is an easy option. Greyhound provides motorcoach connections to cities throughout the United States, with daily departures to all major centers, including Charlotte. Amtrak also provides rail service to Charlotte. The Carolinian and Piedmont lines connect Charlotte to New York City. One of three hubs for US Airways, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of the top airports in the US, connects Charlotte to the world by air. Most recently, Charlotte light rail system, LYNX, is our newest form of transportation and has become a popular means of getting to the Uptown area for Charlotteans.
