Ideally situated smack dab in the center of Uptown, Midtown, Eastover and Myers Park in Charlotte’s historic district, Cherry is currently one of the most coveted addresses in the city. The Cherry area is on the move, as major developmental and revitalization changes continue.
Cherry’s primo location is highly sought-after and is one that is certainly a community to ‘watch’ in the next year. Wonderful, top-ranked school assignments, proximity to everything Charlotte and the look-feel of a beautiful neighborhood has Cherry in the tops of minds for many home buyers in the Charlotte area.

Cherry was platted in 1891 by local, wealthy landowners, John and Mary Myers. So much has changed as Cherry has developed and the city has grown up all around it.
The land on which Cherry was developed was part of a thousand acre cotton farm that John Springs Myers had assembled since the 1870’s along Providence Road outside the then, bustling cotton town of Charlotte.
The name of the neighborhood was inspired by the cherry trees that grew on the property. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, not everyone referred to the area as Cherry - it was known by many as Cherryton, Cherrytown and the city directory listed the area as Myers Quarter as late as the 1910’s. Public records indicate that the Myers themselves never called the community by any other name, than Cherry.
After Myers Park opened in the 1910's, maid and gardener became commonplace occupations for those residing in Cherry. What remains of the earliest dwellings in Cherry today are found along Luther, Cherry, and Baxter Streets, dating from the first decade of the 20th century.
Along with the simple gable-roofed single-family cottages and hip-roofed duplexes, a very few houses appear to date from before World War I; there are just a couple last remaining shotgun type dwellings in the neighborhood as well.
Fast-forward to 2010 and plans were underway to make major changes in this community; I wrote a blurb about one of Charlotte’s biggest revitalization projects - Cherry. The neighborhood was just beginning to make a turn and major developmental changes were just getting underway. Home prices in the community averaged $80,600 and during the ENTIRE year of 2010, only FOUR homes in Cherry sold!
Today, 2018 brings a whole new Cherry! At the close of 2017, 17 homes sold in Cherry for the year and the average sales price average was a whopping $564,692! Now, that is revitalization at its best!
