Charlotte NC Communities - Weddington
The Town of Weddington is situated in the northwestern corner of Union County. In 1842 the General Assembly of NC formed Union County by taking segments of existing Mecklenburg and Anson Counties. Weddington is part of the Sandy Ridge Township with the town center located at the intersection of NC Hwy. 16 (Providence Road), and NC 84. Originally known in the area for its’ fertile farmland, the Waxhaw Indians prospered in Sandy Ridge for ages by the time that the first settlers from Germany, England, Wales, and Scotland began arriving.
Post-American Revolution, a veteran of the war for independence, Reuben Boswell, helped settle this area. In the summer of 1824, Reuben donated four acres of land for what would become the Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church. Twenty-two local farmers donated $262.00 for the construction of the new place of worship. The establishment of this church is responsible for leading the development of the town we know today as Weddington. Reuben Boswell’s grandson, Reuben B. Weddington arrived in 1826 and for the next sixty years, Reuben B. Weddington resided and prospered in the area.
During Reconstruction (post-1865), Union County suffered economically due to decreased demand for the cotton grown here, but as the years passed, the future began looking brighter. By 1890, Reuben B. Weddington helped to construct a new church building on the land that his grandfather had previously donated and the name was changed from Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church to Weddington Methodist Church.
Fast-forward to the Bicentennial when most of North Carolina, including the 'Weddington' portion of Union County, remained largely agricultural. Family farms and winding, two-lane roads were 'standard' as was a 'long' drive to Charlotte. In the 1970’s farmlands began the conversion to new subdivisions and this northwestern corner of Union County became the "Myers Park" of Union County.
The leaders of the community, in order to preserve Weddington for the future generations, and because the prospect of possible annexation by the City of Charlotte was soon coming to fruition, local residents petitioned the NC General Assembly for official incorporation. The act was ratified on May 2, 1983, making the Town of Weddington 'official.'
Weddington residents remain committed to keeping the spirit and character of Weddington alive for those who are there now, and for those to come. Weddington is a beautiful little town with those same winding roads but, now with quick access and 4-lanes into Charlotte as well as close proximity to I-485. Weddington is a friendly community with award-winning schools and new shopping areas cropping up in several areas of town.
Weddington encompasses approximately 17 square miles or 11,044 acres and only 27 of thee 11,044 acres is zoned for commercial use. Weddington currently has a population of 11,420. With mostly single-family homes on lots of one acre or more, Weddington has few condos or townhomes at all. The Weddington Town Hall is located in one of the commercial areas in an old historic home.
Weddington's tax rate is 3 cents per $100 valuation, which is in addition to Union County taxes and help cover the salaries of Union County police officers who are assigned to the Weddington area. Weddington's government is Mayor and Council. Planning for the Town of Weddington is provided by a Zoning Administrator/Planner and a 7-member Planning Board.
