Flight of Honor Charlotte NC

Over 100 World War II veterans from the Charlotte Metro area enjoyed a historic flight on Saturday that took them to Washington D.C.
This, the first ever
Flight of Honor, left from Charlotte so that these veteranss could experience the World War II Memorial at no cost to any of the veterans.
"It's something that needed to be done in the Charlotte area," Bob Wilson, our Rotary governor of District 7680, said. "We owe so much to these people who are parents and grandparents."
The veterans left Charlotte-Douglas International Airport at 9 a.m. and returned around 8 p.m. The trip was completely paid for by various sponsors, including the Mecklenburg-South Rotary club who provided sponsorship for our Assistant District Governor, Tinney Shifley's WWII veteran father.
For many of the veterans, Saturday was the first time that they had seen the Memorial, and for others, the first time that they were able to share their war stories with fellow veterans.
With tens of thousands of WWII veterans in our area, we feel that there is a need for this to become an annual or semi-annual affair!

We did 2 last year and the next one leaves on the 29th. I am honored to be on the Welcome Back committee. (I don't fly) It is so wonderful that this can happen as you know.
This is something that cities all across the country should do to honor them and their service.
Debe- We need to let them know that we honor them and are grateful. We also need to demand an official apology from the White House for their condoning horrific remarks about our vets!
Wow this is wonderful Debe. What a thoughful gift to those who sacrificed for our freedoms.
Charles: I know that this was such a wonderful project and look forward to being one to welcome them back next time. I was unable to do so this time but, that would have to be a fun 'committee' to be on!
Don: Start one in O'Fallon!! Spear head it and watch it unfold, giving veterans such a wonderful experience.
Katerina: Absolutely, we should ALL appreciate them from the bottoms of our hearts--they have done so very much for our way of life--we all owe them so much!
Paddy: I agree--I just love this project and wish I could have seen the vets when they returned--what a wonderful 'interview' that would have been!
