Thankful for Grandmothers

Thankful for Grandmothers

This is in response to Debbie Reynolds' wonderful challenge during these pre-Thanksgiving days.  We all do get so very busy working and with our busy lives that we do not stop to 'smell the roses' or give thanks for all that we have.  Of course, what we really "have" is not materialistic - it's faith, family, friends, relationships...those things that we cannot measure with our bank accounts.

Yesterday, I found a lovely video that reminded me of my grandparents.  My life was so positively shaped by all four of my grandparents - I spent summers with them and loved every minute of my time with them.  It's short - take the minute or so to watch...

I grew up in a family of golfers - all of them!  We spent lots of time at the country clubs when I was with my grandparents.  The only problem with spending time at the clubs? Well, I'm left handed and didn't like golf!  Golfing was just 'too slow' for me - not exciting at all - and without left handed clubs, I simply had no interest or the equipment necessary to participate in this sport!

My grandmother knew this and she always facilitated the days at the club for me - at the pool!  I became a great swimmer and diver as a result!  The Olympic sized pool with both high and low-dive areas, is where I "lived" when everyone was on the course - except my grandmother, who was always by my side and always my biggest fan!

The important things in life are not the 'things' but, the people.  I will forever be thankful for my childhood with my grandparents - all 4 of them (who, happened to live right around the corner from each other)!

What a special video! Thank you for sharing your post on gratitude.

I only had one grandparent that lived long enough to model my life. She taught me so much and made me laugh. We played Scrabble together, worked puzzles. She gave me her time. Now I am geting misty thinking about it. Great memories.

Hi Debe

What a fun video and a wonderful glimpse in your post of beautiful memories to cherish forever...and a bit of sharing about your personal life, too!

Debe Maxwell - what a great way to Thank Grandparents!

And really touched by this -

"The important things in life are not the 'things' but, the people."

Debbie Reynolds - absolutely!  I think that we have to really focus on that 'time' aspect as grandparents now (or soon-to-be, I hope grandparents!) as our days and evenings seem to be FAR more filled than we were younger.  It's sad but, true.

Jeff Dowler, I love that video - makes me cry every time I see it!  We never told our grandparents that we couldn't make it for the holidays when I was small - I have a strong sense that's not the case with our generation.

Praful Thakkar - Oh, I can only hope to be 1/4 as good of a grandparent as any of my 4 were - every one of them!
