Charlotte Landscape - Southern Magnolias are in Bloom Across the City

When the Magnolias are in bloom, the sweet aroma of the large, striking, saucer-like blossoms let’s you know you’re in the South! The fragrance of the Magnolia blooms simply fills the neighborhood - it’s a sweet, undeniable scent.

Magnolia in Bloom

This is not the tree for a small yard as they can grow to 50’ x 50’ - they take a LOT of space in the yard! Just be aware that you cannot grow grass under the dense canopy of the Magnolia tree so, don’t waste your time trying! Another note about planting this glorious tree is that the roots are shallow so you will want to plant it away from pavement and concrete to prevent disturbance of the integrity of driveways and sidewalks.

The evergreen leaves fall each and every day! Yes, this evergreen does stay green but, 365 days of the year, you will find that the Magnolias shed a few of the large, glossy rake required in the fall though!

The Southern Magnolia

If you plant your Magnolia from seed, you likely won’t see blooms for 10-12 years. The 4’ -6’ saplings will bloom a lot sooner than the Magnolias grown from seedlings. The Little Gem & Bracken’s Brown Beauty are two that do bloom a bit earlier than other varieties as well.

If you’re from Mississippi or Louisiana, you enjoy the classic Southern Magnolia as your state flower right here in Charlotte!

Many Southerners moved here, we have streets full of magnolia trees (the white ones), and they are all in bloom.  Enjoyed your photos. Wishing you a great week.

Good afternoon Debe - I don't think we have seen them up here.  I love the flowering dogwoods we have.

Such great looking trees. We had some at our old house and they are so slow growing but worth the wait.
