A Green Spring - Charlotte Homeowner Tips

A Green Spring - Charlotte Homeowner Tips

It’s spring cleaning time — and time for all things growing and green. Speaking of ‘green,’ how green is your house? Upgrading some of your home’s features to be more environmentally friendly can improve your home’s value and save you some ‘green’ in the long run, too.

Green updating may cost a little more up-front but, those improvements are worth it in the long run - both environmentally and in utility bill savings.

Selling your green home in Charlotte

Here are a few green updates you can make to your home:

•Install ENERGY STAR® appliances

•Install solar panels

•Get a geothermal water heater

•Install energy efficient windows and doors

•Install plumbing that reduces water usage

•Use a programable, smart thermostat

•Use lightbulbs that are energy efficient (LED and CFL are the best)

•Don’t crank the air conditioner—use ceiling fans

*Note: Some of these improvements may qualify you for tax breaks.

Mornign Debe.

Solar panels around here are more of a headache then they are worth.  With our state laws, unless you know your home will be your last, the cost associated with keeping them up to date is not cost effective.

I agree with James Dray about the solar, but a lot of people here do get solar panels anyway. Everything else is a "yes!"

This is timely advice to share with home owners.

Have an outstanding month.

Hello Debe,  I like all the items on your with but maybe solar panel.  We have 300 days of sun here but it a 20 year lease

Debe green seems to be the buzz word, unless it involves eliminating planes, and cows

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS. these are great tips, well worth the investment.

Yes, that's a smart way to go about doing it, Endre, especially since you're not thinking of moving anytime soon. You'll at least, get your money's worth out of any green changes you make!

I have heard that too, James Dray but, you can't mention green without mentioning solar panels! ;-)

I saw a home this week that had added them - the ENTIRE front roof of the home is covered in them. I just don't think it adds anything cosmetically to a home if done in the front, Kat Palmiotti!

Yes, green tips seem to actually be considered 'serious' now, Sally K. & David L. Hanson! Before, there was a lot of eye-rolling going on!

It's definitely worth the investment, Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400!  We did as much as we could 4 years ago when we built but, as things conk out, we'll be changing to energy efficient.

That's what we are doing, Grant Schneider - a little at a time!

Yes, those 20-year leases are tough, aren't they? I can't imagine selling a home with that tacked on, Will Hamm

Right?! Green is definitely the word! I had clients asking me what green items they should do in preparation for their sale next year. There's just so much you can do but, I wouldn't want to do it if I coudn't enjoy it for awhile - it really doesn't 'sell' houses like we wish it did, George Souto

Hi Beth Atalay! Thank you and definitely worth the investment - unless you're just about to sell your home! If something NEEDS replacement immediately, I suggest that but, gosh, if only the cost wasn't so prohibitive. Of course, it's gotten better over the years, that's for sure!

Happy Friday!
