Motivational Monday - OWN It!

Motivational Monday - OWN It!

Thoughts On Leadership...and Life

One must never delegate taking responsibility or blame for things going wrong to others. Too often, the temptation exists to always be right, to always have the answer, to never make mistakes, to always know what to do (and say)…

It is not a weakness to be wrong and while it does take courage to own wrong or failure without shifting the blame, doesn’t the buck stop here - always?

Own it!

Not only leaders but, people in general miss out on opportunities to build their influence because they absolutely refuse to own responsibility when things go wrong. How can you expect those you lead OR even those you work with to take responsibility for their part when things go wrong if you don’t (or won’t) do it yourself?

Whether you lead a team or are independent, the example that you set when it comes to ownership of responsibility is something that the ‘world’ notices. We need leaders in our profession - and in life - to take responsibility and embrace humility.

Practice saying these words:  I’m sorry, I was wrong.

Become proficient at & comfortable speaking those words. Those words alone garner more respect than you can imagine…unless you’re one who speaks them. Then you KNOW the impact they have on those who hear them and how well they defuse a situation as well. Think about it...

"First rule of leadership; everything is your fault"

                                                       -Francis Chan

Happy Monday All!

Hello Debe - the quote you included speaks volumes.  Not just for leader but for everyone as you have said. Words to remember.  Words that become behavior.   Truly a part of us.

Good morning Debe - you are spot on!  You must take ownership.  One thing I learned about Normany last week was that Eisenhower had a speech in his pocket in case the mission failed.  In it he was really to take full responsibility.

Debbe,

I have often wondered why so many have trouble saying, I goofed!  It is stress reliever in my opinion.  Happy Monday and we wish you a great week. A

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS - How many times have you watched someone dance and continue to get themselves in deeper and deeper.

Debe, the quote you included is perfect go with your wise words. Saying I screwed up makes me feel less stressed, we all make mistakes and owning them is part of life. Sheri Sperry - MCNE® comment made me chuckle, lots of dancers out there.

We all make mistakes but not everybody will admit when it is their fault. Maybe because they are insecure in who they are.

Happy Monday Debe Maxwell, CRS great post we must own up to our mistakes and YES say I am sorry I was wrong. You will gain respect from others and also a smile. No one is perfect are they? We all make mistakes. That is why they make erasers on the end of pencils

Morning Debe.

I know I made some mistakes yesterday, I know I'll make some more today.  If it goes south, the only person I can blame is the one I see in the mirror

Posted by James Dray, Exceptional Agents, Outstanding Results (Fathom Realty) about 1 month ago

My attitude in customer service is ' It is always my fault - unless it is my fault' -

never waste time trying to find someone else to blame - just go in and fix the issue

Posted by Lise Howe, Assoc. Broker and Attorney Licensed in DC, MD, VA, (Keller Williams Capital Properties) about 1 month ago

Hi Debe,
I learned early on that you gain a lot more respect by admitting fault and being willing to fix it than placing blame.  Even if it's not our fault, we can still take responsibility for a solution, can't we?

I plan on keeping making mistakes in my 80s and taking responsibility. I hopoe I never stop trying.

That is one of those things that I worked for YEARS on when I was raising my two boys, Michael Jacobs. They were 18 months apart so, because they spent so much time together, they were notorious for blaming the other one!

It is a game-changer when you realize that saying you're wrong is actually quite liberating!

Posted by Debe Maxwell, CRS, Charlotte Homes for Sale - Charlotte Neighborhoods (www.iCharlotteHomes.com | The Maxwell House Group | RE/MAX Executive | (704) 491-3310) about 1 month ago

SO funny, Grant Schneider but, that story is likely the spark to this post! I love that story!

As I mentioned to Michael, Ron and Alexandra Seigel, it truly is liberating, isn't it? I also thoroughly enjoy watching others' responses to an admission of a goof!

I so appreciate you always sharing, Roy Kelley! PS I saw that you were 'welcomed' in the Rain earlier today! Looks like some members are having someone else make their comments!!!

Oh, I know that dance well, Sheri Sperry - MCNE® and what is funny is that they eventually get angry at you or ultimately admit...which has to feel like a million pounds off of their shoulders after all of the drama leading up to the admission!!

There's another reason to just say, "I'm sorry, I was wrong!" - It's a time-saver! LOL

Posted by Debe Maxwell, CRS, Charlotte Homes for Sale - Charlotte Neighborhoods (www.iCharlotteHomes.com | The Maxwell House Group | RE/MAX Executive | (704) 491-3310) about 1 month ago

I completely agree, Amanda S. Davidson! It's truly liberating...and it has to be a way of  lowering our blood pressure too!

I totally agree, Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 - it's not just those in a leadership position that should be 'owning' it!

And, thank you for the feature!

You put a smile on my face today when I read your comment, Hannah Williams - you reminded me of my grandmother (who was a school teacher) and I haven't heard that since she was alive. Thanks for the smile, my friend!

OMG, I love it, Lise! "It is always my fault - unless it is my fault" - PERFECT! And, I'm with you - moving on allows us to focus on the fix, what we're going to do to improve upon what happened and what we're going to do to keep it from happening again.
