Motivational Monday - Being the Best - The Challenge is ON

Motivational Monday - Being the Best - The Challenge is ON

Some days...I believe that all outcomes in life, of which we have a choice, are based upon our attitude. When challenged, many will shy away from the challenge, while others take the challenge head-on.

I'm reminded of my oncology patients from back in my nursing days; it seemed that every patient who was diagnosed with cancer asked the question, "How long do I have [to live], doctor?"

Without having performed a scientific study during those days, I will attest to being keenly aware of my patients' responses to the doctors' response, regardless of the time-line that was given. You see, to some, it really didn't matter, they were going to accept what the doctor said as gospel. While they were saddened by the time-line, they were going to get their affairs in order and 'wait' - they did not want to fight; in fact, some didn't even think to fight.

And then there were the fighters! No matter what the doctor's prognosis or time-line, they used that as their 'bar' and by golly, they were going to 'beat' the bar...and they did. Every. Single. Time. Some lived for years after the diagnosis, cancer-free - they fought, their family supported their fight and trust me, NEVER was there a moment that the fight was easy - NEVER. But, they fought the fight and they rallied.

To be the best...

Not all were able to win the war but, the most of the fighters did win the 'bar battle' and they won it proudly.

I could write a book on my experiences with patients and their battles, fought and won, fought and lost. One tenacious patient, a well-known philanthropist here in Charlotte, didn't mind me (or anyone, for that matter) seeing her at her worst. She was fighting and she knew it wasn't a pretty fight.

Invitation

I'll never forget my excitement when I received the invitation to visit her in her penthouse suite in a very upscale area here in Charlotte. The invitation was for a gathering in her home, after hours and, of course, a couple of months after her discharge from my care.

When I arrived, she was dressed in a beautiful suit that fitted her to a 't' - including the few (much needed) additional pounds she had put on since we last saw one another. Her hair was meticulously coiffed - she was stunningly beautiful!

Her comment to me, and I'll never forget it, "You never judged me. You always loved me no matter how bad my day was going. The entire time, I looked forward to this moment - the moment that you and my family could see me like this - me again."

If you or anyone you know has ever faced the cancer challenge head-on, you KNOW that fight and you know how hard that fight is and how astonishing it is to be on the remission side of that fight.

Whether you're fighting cancer or any other illness, a challenge at work or at home, know that the fight is worth it; it won't be a pretty fight but, in the end, totally worth it.

Now, have yourselves a fabulous Monday!

Good morning Debe. When the fight is on, give it all you got. The result will push you well past the bar. Some may even stop for a drink! Enjoy your day

I'm all for that celebratory drink and I know that most who have crossed the bar, are as well, Wayne Martin! Happy Monday!

Good morning, Debe Maxwell, CRS what a wonderful story.... fighting the fight.... champions do that and your past patient certainly is one.... and your support for her assisted her with gaining success.... that makes you a champion, too...

Posted by Barbara Todaro, Marketing Agent for The Todaro Team (RE/MAX Executive Realty ) 4 months ago

Good morning, Debe - life is a series of challenges.  Big and not-so-big.  You're right, attitude matters.  And it matters a lot.

There was a segment on 60 Minutes last night about a successful architect who became blind and how he exceeds any expectations.  A powerful story.  And it's one we hear told often of others who achieve great things in life despite adverse situations.

Yes, it's about attitude.

Good morning Debe. I was inspired by this. I have you and Ray both in my prayers.

She was certainly a champion, as were many, many of my patients, Barbara Todaro! In fact, the challenge for me was not being their biggest cheerleader but, teaching the family to put smiles on their faces and compete with me in being the patient's biggest cheerleader. Sometimes when our family is involved, it's difficult to work beyond the emotion but, that is exactly what the patient needs...and wants us to do!

You've been challenged in a big way in the past, Michael Jacobs - you know the attitude you have to adopt and you know what a difference attitude makes. I say that about business all of the time - attitude is everything - but, it begins in our personal lives where it is our foundation.

The great thing about attitudes is, unlike old dogs (not being able to teach them new tricks), we CAN change them!

Hi Sheila Anderson! First of all, THANK YOU! I was talking to Ray last night and told him I got my 'Motivational Monday' graphic done and now, I just need to write a short paragraph and I'll be done!

Well, the mind wanders, doesn't it?! LOL

Happy Monday!

Debe, of course I LOVE your Motivational Monday post; I always do. Life isn't easy, but how we meet challenges is so important, as you know.

Last December while on my planning retreat I was reading the book, "Mindset" by Carol Dwyck. She talks about fixed and growth mindsets--and how we can change our mindset. I know which mindset you, Ray and I share.

Such a wonderful story!  I think it is human nature for us to not want people to see us when we are down, but rather when we are well.  I have so much respect for those that fight through disease or ailment, rather than just letting it take control.  My Mom has shown me an amazing example of that and it pushes me to strive to be better than I am.

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS,

Your post evoked memories of my mother-in-law who was a fighter. Back in 1977 she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. This was right after my son was born. My husband was distraught saying that we bring a life into this world and one is taken away from us.  However, the short time she had left, turned into 19 years. She watched my son graduate from high school and she lived life to the fullest fighting every step of the way. We were told by her doctors that she single-handily changed the outcomes of that disease. She was treated by Mao Clinic in Rochester and the moved to Mao in Phoenix.  It is probably why my husband and I moved to Sedona. (An even longer story!)

Mao gave her every new cocktail that came out to find out what worked best.

Until her dying day...she said she was going to beat it!  A truly amazing lady.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - Inspirational stories like this are ones you don't want to forget. Thank you for giving us a peek behind the curtain of the Nurse you were and the Angel you still are today. Your story and Sheri Sperry - MCNE® too are examples of planting the seeds to help support others going through "C" land. When patients are successful, it's not because of the treatment, it's because their work is not finished yet and isn't it amazing how people come into our lives at times when they are needed most. Regardless of which side you're on, the patient side or Nurse or Caregiver, you're making us believe life is all that counts. It's not the pretty clothes in the closet, your hair and face, how much money you have, your success stories,  the number of accolades that you received, or likes on FB or any other type of Social Media. It's about the courage it takes to help others and for others to help themselves.

God love you and Ray too!

Yes ma'am we most certainly do share that mindset - I think that's why I was immediately drawn to you here, Lottie Kendall! Positive people really do make such a difference when someone is going through something as scary as cancer or any other illness that they really don't know 'how' to fight.

Posted by Debe Maxwell, CRS, Charlotte Homes for Sale - Charlotte Neighborhoods (www.iCharlotteHomes.com | The Maxwell House Group | RE/MAX Executive | (704) 491-3310) 4 months ago

I'm in complete agreement with you, Brian England and my hubby would agree that I'm the first to say, I don't care what you look like when you're fighting, JUST FIGHT! I always follow up with, "I know, it's easy for me to say..."

I know you're proud of your Mother - and you should be. No matter how hard she's fighting, she's always going to push you to be the best you can be. ❤️

Posted by Debe Maxwell, CRS, Charlotte Homes for Sale - Charlotte Neighborhoods (www.iCharlotteHomes.com | The Maxwell House Group | RE/MAX Executive | (704) 491-3310) 4 months ago

She did beat that evil disease for 19 full years and look what she was able to see - the birth of your son, watch him as he grew up and even graduating from high school - that is IMPRESSIVE, Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

I'd say she, quite handily, beat that bar! Had she not fought the fight she did, just as the doctors said, the outcome would have been totally different. I think for me, the mindset would have to be to fight the fight until they find a cure!!

Posted by Debe Maxwell, CRS, Charlotte Homes for Sale - Charlotte Neighborhoods (www.iCharlotteHomes.com | The Maxwell House Group | RE/MAX Executive | (704) 491-3310) 4 months ago

Happy Monday to you too, Will Hamm! You know why I wrote this - the fight is sometimes overwhelming but, SO worth it.

Posted by Debe Maxwell, CRS, Charlotte Homes for Sale - Charlotte Neighborhoods (www.iCharlotteHomes.com | The Maxwell House Group | RE/MAX Executive | (704) 491-3310) 4 months ago

You are so right, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP! It has nothing to do with ANYTHING but, fighting the fight - nothing - no money, no success, no likes and it never matters what you look like while you're fighting either. What is so funny is that after battle and I was able to see her again, in her 'comfort zone' and in all of her glory, two things she said resonated with me - loudly...

1. "You never judged me." First of all, OF COURSE NOT!! But, secondly, and I wish I had had this conversation with her - had someone judged her in the past? Who? Such an amazing woman, I couldn't IMAGINE who would EVER judge her - other than to think she was a saint!

2. "Me again." I'll never forget that. I had never had a pateint reflect that sense of being to me before. I did seek clarification there though - saying, "Me again! You're always you - beautiful inside and out." She explained that she gave up the fight to 'look good' on the outside so she could focus all of her energy on beating the disease.

I believe that was a generational thing - always polished and never a hair out of place. The things we learn with experience, huh?! And, to your point, while she was fighting, her money didn't matter, her social status was never even a thought - the focus is on the WIN and she won - not only her battle but, everyone's heart who helped her win her battle. You can't put a price tag on that...or a million 'likes!'

Well, thank you, Alan May! I would never do anything but, protect a patient's dignity either! In fact, that is part of the registered nurses' Code of Ethics:

“The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person”

People say 'attitude is everything' when it comes to business, Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® - most have NO idea how patients like your mother put their attitudes to use, fighting the fight of their lives. I'm sure you were right there, fighting with her too, Rebecca.

Hey there my fellow nurse friend, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland! I see other agents, clients, brokers, lenders, the whole enchilada, getting upset about the little things in our business, don't you? There are SO many 'bigger' things in life, including the fight that you are all-too familiar with, that is REALLY the 'big deal.'

I think that's why we have so many repeat clients - we take care of our clients like we did as nurses and don't let them know that we're worried about a thing!

Hope you're having a wonderful start to the week, Margaret!
