National Day of Service and Remembrance Local Events/Services #NeverForget

Charlotte Area Events Commemorating 9/11
Several events are taking place this week, in and around the the Charlotte area, to honor and remember the victims, first responders and their families involved in the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

On Tuesday, Governor Roy Cooper ordered all American and North Carolina flags flying at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, September 11th in honor of Patriot Day, also known as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Privately flown flags are, of course, also encouraged to be flown at half-staff.

9/11 events this week, in and around the Charlotte area include:

2019 Charlotte 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb - SAT 9/14

The 2019 Charlotte Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb honoring the FDNY firefighters, police, and EMS who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on September 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter, police officer, or EMS by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and 10 EMS are honored - and that the world knows that we will never forget.

The Stair Climb funds programs supporting the families of your local fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.

Flags Over I-77 In York County - Wednesday, 9/11

The POW-MIA Advocate Group and Rolling Thunder Chapter One, South Carolina will host the displaying of American flags on several bridges over I-77 in York County. Flags will be displayed from 7AM to 9:03AM Wednesday morning and again from 4PM to 6PM Wednesday evening.

Concord | Laps For Life Blood Drive at Charlotte Motor Speedway

The American Red Cross and Charlotte Motor Speedway will pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. On Wednesday, eligible blood donors can give blood in memory of Sept. 11 victims at the Laps for Life Blood Drive from 10am to 7pm in the Paddock Club, located in the speedway’s infield. The blood drive kicks off with an opening ceremony at 9:30am on the Avenue of Flags by the speedway’s ticket office. A moment of silence will take place at 9:32AM

Cornelius Lemley Fire & Rescue Annual 9/11 Remembrance Vigil

The community is invited to gather at the Cornelius Never Forget 9/11 Monument located at Fire Station No. 1, 19729 S. Main Street. The event is scheduled from 8:30AM to 11:00AM, Wednesday, 9/11.

Morning Debe.

I'm sure I will be repeating this several times today.  I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news.  It fundamentally changed the United States forever

Good morning, Debe Maxwell, CRS I clearly remember what I was doing and my family members who had just relocated to MA and were living with me at that time.... God Bless America....

Like you, I will never forget - and I was actually watching the morning news with the towers in the background and saw the first plane hit. My very first thought was terrorism. The gut is almost always right and I was so saddened that it was that morning, James Dray.

Same here, Beth Atalay. It has definitely changed us all - we'll never be the same. But, boy, what a wonderful, thoughtful, selfless 'village' that stepped in that day and the months following. We are a united nation when we need to be, that's for sure.

Barbara Todaro - God Bless America!

I remember worrying if/how I could get my boys out of school and how long they would keep my husband in the International Trade Center where he worked, before making them leave. It didn't take long. We watched together in deep sadness - realizing that our lives would be forever changed.

Good morning Debe Maxwell, CRS - I remembered the day and recalled what I was doing when I heard about the first plane and I knew for sure when I heard about the second.  I lost people I knew that day.
