Cheezy, Sleezy Salesperson, Drama Queen or Classy Professional?

Cheezy, Sleezy Salesperson, Drama Queen or Classy Professional?

Cheesy Salesman
While we are 'stuck at home' during these unprecedented times, many are turning to social media to be seen and heard. Our businesses depend upon our staying top-of-mind but, in times like this, how are you responding to that call?

Sadly, we're seeing a lot of cheesiness going on! While we may joke a bit about it but, boy, it surely does scream of desperation and lack of TRUE concern for the consumer. We are a service-based business and giving of ourselves, our knowledge and our best-foot-forward efforts are what the consumer is looking for right now - not sleaziness! Being there as a professional for our clients and potential clients is key right now - we simply don't need to be in their faces.

Continue your regular marketing to demonstrate the calm leader that you are. Remember that when you portray business as usual, you allay fears and instill calm. It is also very important to me that my clients view me as human.

Most of my clients are social media friends who know that transparency is very important to me. I share my human side on social media every day. These days are no different - in fact, our friends, family and clients need us to be more human now than ever before.

Doom, gloom and despairThis was originally not in my post but, I just received a nice message from a client who is currently in Escrow. He wanted to thank me for being 'real' and for not creating drama around the anticipated Closing with regards to COVID-19. He follows me on social media and stated that he wanted to thank me for not saying things like, "this is scary" or dreadful, devastating, etc.

I explained that I used to be a nurse and have a lot of physician and nurse friends who are helping me 'keep it real.' I don't even quote them - I only cite CDC or WHO and recommend that everyone watch the daily updates from the White House Task Force. I highly recommend that you do the same. Your clients and/or potential clients will see how you handle yourself - especially now when people have more online time on their hands.

I've seen quotes from other real estate professionals from websites that are not 'official' - some that even state that the information has not been verified when you visit the site! That, my friends, is what drama kings and queens do and it is not helping their professional reputation AT ALL.

In a nutshell - just be you and be there for them professionally - when they need you - not in their faces, especially during this time that is very difficult for many. Share TRUTH and FACTS - not information from non-credible sites. YES, this is real and YES, we all need to be cautious and by all means, practice social distancing. We need not add a dose of drama...just be real.

I thought you were calling me names again...

I hope your week is starting out grand Debe

LOL I would never do that, Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS

And, I hope your week is a grand one as well. How are you faring with the Shelter in Place order? I was fully expecting our governor to follow suit but, still not yet. No schools and no open bars & restaurants (other than take out/drive-up) and most businesses are having employees work from home so, Charlotte is fairly quiet too...just no 'orders' to Shelter in Place.

Hi Debe- We all need to be upbeat which is not to say we're walking around with our heads in the sand. Know the facts and their sources. We're all new to this. As for shelter in place, our Texas governor said today that for now we do not have that but he is asking everyone to respect the social distancing so that he does not have to implement it. Fingers crossed.

I agree - no heads-in-the-sand here either, Kathy! What I am seeing is that those of us who understand the severity but, choose to be proactively cautious and non-alarmists are viewed as taking this lightly. I understand the severity but, I feel that as professionals, we NEED to remain calm and get our clients through this with as little stress as possible.

I'm on MD-ordered quarantine due to bronchitis/possible walking pneumonia and respecting it to a 't.' By the time we have our Shelter in Place order, I'll have served my time already! LOL

My entire house will be clean though - if there is a silver lining!

Have a great week, Kathy Streib

I hear you, Tammy Lankford, I would worry about them bringing it home to Cooper. It's a scary disease and our medical professionals are our front line. I'm worried about a lot of our dear friends (including my best girlfriend) who are doctors and nurses.

I just keep praying for them all and for everyone to be safe and stop the spread. What is bothering me the most is people (agents included) spreading propaganda - articles with totally false information that appear to be real. The sad thing is that they post the articles and their readers believe them, totally missing the caption at the top of the page that says the content of any article on the site has not been verified!

Like you, it's nose to the grindstone and trying to share positive news to avoid more public panic...all the while, encouraging people to BE SAFE (in non-alarming terms).

Debe, we are on the same page, there are so many who are paralyzed, part of it I sympathize part of it I do not get. As of this writing, I am in the process of getting three new listings... negotiating three offers on two of my listings and they are vacant lots... clearly a long term investment and with all due respect to those who are paralyzed these are buyers with visions and are not confused by the world around them. I'm shocked at the number of people who are paralyzed with this, Endre Barath, Jr. I think we're both just too stubborn to let it get us down! Seriously, those with vision are the ones who prospered during the Recession...and I think the same will hold true after this is resolved.

Frankly I don't use my personal Facebook page for much beyond pictures of puppies, flowers and bees.  I'm finding myself increasingly disappointed in "professionals" that I used to respect highly, but have decided this is the perfect time to continue their political rampages.  Got it, you over there, you HATE Trump and any excuse to knock him you're going to do it.  And you over on the other end of the spectrum, Trump can do no wrong.  So I'm snoozing more and more people 30 days at a time to keep some sanity in my feed.

As far as my blogging, I'm touching on COVID-19 with some top-line, here's what it means to you Ohio home buyers and sellers.  Some factors you should consider and what we as agents can and can't do for you.  As far as the disease itself, we haven't been leaving the house other then grocery/supply runs every 4-5 days, and showings as needed (which isn't much right now as most buyers seemed to have punched the PAUSE button).  Bill

It's really important to let our clients decide the time-line for both buying - and selling right now. We have let our clients know we are ready when they are - today or tomorrow, or next month. We can certainly do what needs to be done in a safe and sane manner.

Drama and fear are not necessary. What I don't appreciate either, are folks who are ignoring the basics of social distancing and being cavalier.  They are prolonging this for everyone.

Debe, This post is the epitome of classic professionalism.  We do not live in denial land about the realities of unforeseen circumstances, nor do we camp out in internet doom and gloom land.  We listen to every client's indiviual needs  as to timing of their buy or sale and present options in our state for those under contract.  Just as your client was so grateful for the balance you brought to his transaction that he wrote to thank you, I'm sure many more in your market will read this and know you are the realtor for any challenge.

You are SO right, Barbara Todaro - distancing IS critical and it's really not that difficult to observe is it? I don't understand why so many are ignoring the guidelines. I can do without the concerts and the masses for as long as they need us to...and keeping 6' distance is really not that tough either. I think if more of us would observe that, our transmission numbers would be considerably lower.

Hi Debe,
I do hope you're feeling better.

Personally, I don't think agents need to make an effort to be there "professionally" for prospects... beyond  letting them know what business you're in by keeping them informed and responding to their inquiries.  What is important is letting them know you are there for them "personally" if there is anything within your power to do.  It's a time for supporting those around us, not soliciting them for business.  In the long run, I believe that will be better for business.

Same thing applies to lenders, Debe Maxwell, CRS ... this is a challenging time.  How we meet it will say a lot.  Personally, I've been trying to keep my marketing consistent as far as the amount I post and where I post.  However, I am doing some tweaking of content.  I definitely do not want to seem callous ... or opportunistic during this challenge.  It can be a fine line to walk ...

I'm in total agreement with you, Liz and Bill Spear! It's really sad how everything has to be politically driven, isn't it? I'm really exhausted by both sides - hatefulness seems to be the predoinant behavior. If only they realized just how foolish they appear to everyone else!

I'm doing minimal conversations about it but, addressing concerns to keep them calm. I've touched all of my clients in the last 24 hours and will continue to keep touching them. And, yes, buyers are mostly on stand-by right now. What is funny is that I would be more likely to be nervous if I was a seller - a buyer can control what they touch in a home...or what they use to touch handles/knobs, etc.

Hang in there - stay healthy and safe - and keep doing what you're doing.

Thank you for your always thoughtful comments, Kris!

Thank you, Carol Williams! I'm on Day-2 of antibiotics so, I'm hopeful this turns around in another day or two.

And, as for being there for them professionally - we are in the midst of several deals that are in Escrow. So, remaining calm and walking/talking them through this process (which has changed tremendously over the past week), is very important to them and to the success of their transactions. So far, so good and I'm just praying that they all get to the end with smiles on their faces.

Otherwise, it's personal and as I said, being real. And, I agree, that is what I built my business on - I need not make any changes with respect to that!

A week or so back I started getting "scare tactic" emails. They had a list of who was most likely to die from the virus - and an assurance that protecting your immune system with Vitamin C would save you. BUT - not just any vitamin C. ONLY the kind they sold.

Each day the emails laid on more "scare" and expanded the list of who was most at risk. Finally I stayed with one of them long enough to find their unsubscribe button. NOT that I had subscribed in the first place...

It's cruel, nasty, and unhealthy to try to instill fear to the point of panic. I feel so sorry for people who are terrified. My son's girlfriend is one of them - and she's in Montana, where (as far as I could find) there are only 4 cases in the whole huge state.

Meanwhile, this morning I helped an agent with a letter to her past clients, current clients, and sphere - she wanted to let them all know she was available to make a grocery run, pick up a perscription, or just chat on the phone if they were in need of a friendy voice.

Cheesiness indeed. I was reading Marte Cliff a few days ago about just how stupid things have become. I felt that most agents were just jamming 'buy a house' down everyone's throats. I'm sure that more people have time to go thru their media feeds so how many times a day do they see this junk?

I don't want to be that junk. The posts absolutely scream 'BUY A HOUSE' I'm scared I can't make my Jaguar  payment.

Oh, what a lovely comment, Patricia - the nicest one I think I've ever gotten! ❤️

I completly enjoyed meeting you also and like you, hated to see you have to leave - we are definitely sister down-to-earth Southern (no drama!) gals, aren't we?! I think that's why we hit it off so well.

I love your hugs Abby Stiller and I know that we are going to come out on the other side, having tweaked to perfection and held our clients hands through this all the while!

Hugs back to you!

OH my goodness, Marte Cliff, that is terrible! That is so true that it is cruel, nasty and unhealthy. I don't understand why people feel like that behavior is okay, especially to scare people when everyone is already on edge.

I saw a friend share a link over the weekend - to a site that was full of crazy information that didn't correspond to the CDC at all. I wondered where she found it and then as I was doing some research, saw the 'warning' at the top of the page that people can share on the site - there is no 'fact-checking!' How someone feels comfortable sharing such ridiculous spam is beyond me.

I LOVE the letter idea for your client - I have made those calls myself. Now that we are on lock-down here in Charlotte, it's more important to let it be known that you're here to help.

Calm and factual is how I am approaching it, Realty Pack

It's sad that it had to come to closing down the beaches when, had everyone minded the protocol, they could have been a good source of exercise & fresh air, Kathleen Daniels. "Help you help yourself," how sad is that?

OMG, I laughed out loud at your Jaguar comment - you are SO right, Lyn Sims! I don't want to be that junk either!

I did the same thing, Marte Cliff - it's sad but, true!

Thank you so much, Jeff Dowler, CRS. We will get through this and the best way to approach it is in a truthful, factual, calm manner - I couldn't agree more!

Stay safe!

You (former) nurses know how to behave and see things from a truly different perspective, having seen so much suffering.  Great post!

I thought that the Oklahoma City agent who posted her picture with Joe Exotic should reconsider what that might mean to a potential client.

"Remember that when you portray business as usual, you allay fears and instill calm."

It is not business as usual! Yet, panic, rumors, and unfounded information is not helpful. Those who know you, Debe Maxwell, CRS, know that you deal in facts and realty and truth. They know that they can depend on you to help them in these challenging times.
